There are two types of EV chargers available, alternating current (AC) chargers and direct current (DC) chargers. In the UK, the power that comes from the grid is always AC. However, all batteries (including the battery inside an EV) can only store power as DC. Most household plugs have a converter built into them, meaning when you are charging anything with a battery, AC power is converted to DC.
AC Charging
When it comes to EV’s, they have their own ‘converter’ built into them. This takes AC power and converts it into DC so it can charge the battery. It is worth noting that some cars can only charge using an AC charger (Renault Zoe).
DC Charging
A DC charger will convert the power within the charger itself. The converter in the car is bypassed and the power can feed straight into the battery. This makes DC charging a much quicker option if the car is capable of it.

AC Only
AC Fast Charging units are perfectly suited for locations where the driver is likely to stay for a number of hours. Sites such as schools, hotels, leisure parks, and golf clubs can all benefit hugely from AC chargers.
